Kandy is the second-largest city in Sri Lanka and the Last Capital Kingdom of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. The city is 115km away from the capital of Colombo and Kandy is renowned to be the cultural capital and a sacred city in Sri Lanka. Kandy city surrounds an evergreen mountain range which locates in the thickly forested interior of the island, at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level.
The tropical plantations are abundant in this mountain area, mainly tea. Kandy is known as the main pilgrimage destination for its pinnacle site, the Temple of the tooth where Buddhists worship the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. The Kandy was the last capital of Sinhalese before the capture of the British in 1815. Kandy, for its sacredness and the spiritual significance of the temple, was declared to be a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.
